THE TALLET

The Tallet is a creative space in rural Gloucestershire run by Nicholas and Vanessa Arbuthnott. It was developed as a community space for artists, makers and thinkers to develop their own creative practice as well as possibilities to engage with local community groups. There are large studio spaces and artists accomodation. Other facilities include textile printing and pottery. There is an emphasis on enviromentally conscious practices, and artists are encouraged to take part in growing and harvesting vegetables on site.

Vanessa Arbuthnott does weekly workshops with the Nelson Trust, which artists are invited to contribute to.

Centro de las Arte San Agustin (CaSa)

Founded by Francisco Toledo in 2006, CaSa was originally a 19th century textile mill, which has been converted into a grand ecological arts centre. Toledo acquired the property to create the first centre of ecological arts in Latin America. CaSa has artist accommodation, studios and two large halls used for exhibitions, conferences and performance space.

The workspaces at CaSa include: acid-free engraving & traditional graphics, eco-friendly photo lab (works with ecological developers), digital graphics (with large format plotters), laser cutting (except for metal and glass cutting), one classroom and one large gallery (mostly used for theatrical and dance presentations).

University of Oaxaca (UABJO)

The University was founded on January 8, 1827 as the Oaxacan Institute for Arts and Sciences.

UK residents on the 2015 residency in Oaxaca gave presentation of work in progress to students from the art department at UABJO. Our artists were subsequently invited to exhibit in the gallery at the University.

Since then we have developed an exchange program with UABJO, offering 3 final year students or alumni from art architecture and biological science. They will be hosted in Reading. Returning UK residents will have access to these same departments.

Reading University with MERL

The Museum of English Rural Life (MERL) houses the most comprehensive national collection of objects, books and archives relating to the history of food, farming and the countryside. The collections have Designated status ensuring their importance is recognised nationally and internationally.

The First Food residency began developing relations with MERL and Reading in 2015 when Mexican artists were given guided tours of the collection, gardens and herbarium.

MERL and the University of Reading are supporting First Food residents by offering accomodation, studio and workshop space.

Jardin Cebu

Jardin Cebu is an artist run space in the heart of Oaxaca. Despite the central location it is an oasis of calm, with an open air court yard. Previously FFR artists have had a room with access to a private studio within the space, but shared a kitchen. This is supportive to residents as it helps build relations with local artists who frequent Jardin Cebu.

Guillermo Olguin is the owner of this space. He is an established Mexican artist who works in a variety of mediums, often integrating found objects such as old photographs into his image making. Guillermo also runs a printing workshop with a giant press and access to technical support from Master Printers.
